The activities and investments of Andermatt Swiss Alps have a strong impact on the development of tourism and the economy in the region. The figures in detail.

Beds

Bed capacity in the Ursern Valley has risen steadily in recent years owing to investments by Andermatt Swiss Alps. Following years of stagnation, The Chedi Andermatt initiated the turnaround in 2013 with about 240 new hotel beds. Lodging options in the Ursern Valley grew further with the holiday apartments in Andermatt Reuss and the Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen (about 500 beds).

Lodging nights

In recent years, Andermatt has posted a sharp rise in overnight stays. Investments by Andermatt Swiss Alps (hotels, apartment buildings, ski area, golf course, concert hall) played a major part in this. Today, the tourism region sees twice as many overnight stays than it did ten years ago. The jump was particularly noticeable between 2018 and 2019 after completion of the Andermatt-Sedrun ski area link.

Skier days

Skier days mean daily visits by guests who use a ski lift at the SkiArena (Andermatt-Sedrun). After the ski areas were linked, this figure reached a record in the 2018/19 season. The numbers fell in the spring of 2020 with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Visitor figures at the ski area began rising again in the 2021/22 season, meaning an increase also in skier days.

Housing market

Andermatt Swiss Alps makes an important contribution toward creating new housing in the tourism region so that more people can live in Andermatt again. As at the end of the 2022 financial year, the company had built a total of 665 apartments and hotel residences, of which 650 had been sold. In the years following approval of the second-home initiative – between 2013 and 2016 – the company built new apartments only sporadically. But then, between 2017 and 2022, it built 477 units. Most of these were residences in the village quarter of Andermatt Reuss.

Population

Andermatt Swiss Alps makes an important contribution toward enabling more people to live in Andermatt year-round. The village population rose to nearly 1,600 in 2022. This moderate but steady growth over the years is atypical compared with other mountain towns. The population increase is due to new jobs created at the Andermatt Swiss Alps Group. As a result of the intensive construction activity, an increasing number of people are relocating or even returning to Andermatt – including moving into the traditional village centre.
